She was performing in the first play of which he was put in charge of the sets. He watched her from the wings, waving men in and out to accommodate her timing, and she had impeccable timing, that woman. He knew from the moment when she did her last (that night, it was her seventh) curtain call, he wanted her to be his, not to own, but to hold. Christian looked at her, the much admired Margrethe, first lady of the stage, and reckoned she had been owned enough in her life. Even a marriage into nobility and endless wealth couldn't buy freedom, after all.
